Numbers now reveal who we are as people.

Numbers on the scale have to be small,

If you’re a girl anything above 5’5 is “too tall”,

Boys have to be above 6ft to be attractive

and if anything below,

they’re “too short”.

Girls live in constant fear,

always wondering if they’re good enough,

if their hair is the right color,

if their organs perfectly touch their bones,

leaving no fat at all on their bodies.

Their thighs have to be more than two inches apart,

forgetting that over three means an eating disorder.

But it’s not only girls who are ridiculed.

Boys are looked down upon

if the excess on their bodies isn’t

muscle.

It’s forgotten that

mental illnesses are not determined by gender.

Depression,

anxiety,

eating disorders,

PTSD,

even scars.

Boys can have them too.

2015.

That was the year gay people could marry

their significant other.

People say that “love is love”

but if they truly mean it,

why are they disgusted

when a man kisses a man?

Why is a woman looked down upon

for holding hands with someone of the same

gender?

What even is gender?

“The state of being male or female.”

But if one does not have the “parts”

of a man or woman,

but look and feel like one,

they aren’t “actually”

male or female?

If skin is just a color,

why is white skin

“prettier” than black?

We are all made up of the same bones,

Just people living in different bodies.

We are all the same.

We always try to be someone we aren’t.

But why? Why do we all try

so hard to mask our flaws for society?

I say,

screw the opinions of others.

I am not a goddamn puppet

who is controlled by other people pulling my strings.

I for one, am done living in fear,

worrying about little things

to fit to standards,

and I am done pretending

to be someone I’m not.
